Stem Cell Introduction
Life science is the subject that develops the most rapidly in natural science at the end of 20th century and the beginning of this century. The development and application of stem cell become one of the most outstanding area. In 1999, the new discovery of stem cell research leads Science "Top Ten" list of the best scientific advances. In 2000, it was again selected in "Top Ten" list of the best scientific advances of the world. At the present time, stem cell researches are almost being applied in all areas of life science and biological medicine.” Famous biologist E.B. Wilson said: All the answers of biological problems must ultimately be sought in the cells, for every living organism is, or at some time has been a cell.
What is Stem Cell
Human body is constituted by 4 to 6 trillion cells; there are over 230 kinds and two broad categories, functional cell and stem cell. The first category is functional cell, whose life activities embody humans various physiological functions. For example, heart is consisted of myocardial cells, whose rhythmical contraction and diastole realise the physiological function of the heart. Human thinking is realised by neurons transmitting information in brain. We can say that because of the completeness and activeness of functional cell, we can stay young, healthy and energetic.
Just like people, cells will die. Normal cell apoptosis and cell necrosis caused by external factors can make people lose a plenty of functional cells. So we need another kind of cells to regenerate new functional cells to replace apoptosis and necrosis cells. These kinds of cells that can regenerate new cells are stem cells. Stem cells exist in all the tissues and organs in human body. The quantity and quality of stem cells determine the functional state of tissues and organs.Stem cell is also organism; their lives also experience the process of growth, development, maturity, senescence and death in accordance with the order of nature. With age increasing, the quantity and quality of stem cell in body decrease gradually. They can not regenerate young and healthy cells according to the body needs to replace senescent and lesion cells. Ultimately, they reflect peoples senescence and disease.
So restoring the quantity of active stem cells is the key to prevent senescence, preventing and curing various diseases.
